Male Fertility Success - Boost your sperm count and conquer male infertility

What is sperm motility?

Tip! Asthenozoospermia: fewer than 50% spermatozoa have forward progression

Sperm motility - the ability to move - is often more important than sperm count. There are two types of sperm, those that swim, and those that don't. Only sperm able to propel themselves upward to the egg and fertilize it are useful.

According to the World Health Organization, sperm motility is graded from an "a" to a "d" as follows:

Grade "a" - fast and progressive sperms that swim forward in a straight line.

Grade "b" - slow progressive sperms that swim forward, but their direction is curved or crooked or slowly (non-linear).

Grade "c" - these are nonprogressive sperms that move their tails, but don't move forward. They are considered to only have local motility.

Grade "d" - immotile sperms do not move at all.

Sperm grades of "c" and "d" are considered poor with respect to male fertility. That's because if the sperm motility is poor, the testicles may produce poor sperm quality and fail to function properly. This could result in even somewhat motile sperm being unable to fertilize the woman's egg.

In healthy sperm, more than 50% are typically active, with more than 25% moving forcefully in one direction. Motility is what enables the sperm to travel through the woman's cervical canal, into the uterus and fallopian tubes until the final, ultimate destination: penetration of the egg.

Tip! Varicoceles are often painful conditions, affecting sperm count

Speed is also important. Just like a long-distance runner - or swimmer, in this case - the strongest and fastest has the best chance of winning. According to WHO guidelines, more 25% of a healthy man's sperm exhibit progressive motility - the ability to swim fast. These are the sperm with the best chance of fertilizing the woman's egg.
